At first boot-up I found approximately 40 processes running and over three-quarters were useless to me (i.e. Intel's wireless utility --Dell Inspiron 14  Battery I prefer the Windows' utility). The keys feel sturdy although a bit noisy (so don't go typing away while someone is trying to sleep). Additionally my finger tips have occasionally gotten trapped under Dell Latitude D520 battery ,a key when typing away furiously. Performance and Benchmarks System performance was averageToshiba Tecra A2 battery compared to other mid-range notebooks with integrated graphics. The Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 processor helped keep system lag to a minimum while compressing music or video for a portable media device, and even allowed the system to play Toshiba Tecra A9 battery720p and 1080p HD video. The notebook is also designed to handle Blu-ray movies with configurations that have that drive, which is fine for the X4500 graphics chipset. Outside of gaming the notebook Toshiba Tecra M10 battery handled everything we threw at it without bogging down. I think the only area that could see some improvement is the hard drive, which is easy to swap with a 7200rpm model when configuring the notebook on theToshiba Tecra M2 battery Sony website, or upgrading after the purchase. Thermal output from the VAIO CS was minimal, with little heat output from the Intel T6400 processor and Intel integrated graphics.Toshiba Tecra M3 battery All sections of the notebook that make contact with your legs or hands stayed just above room temperature, never getting hot. Noise from the notebook was minimal while the fan was spinning, but the noises that the fan made starting and stopping did get annoying. Battery Battery life is limited by the AMD Toshiba Tecra M6 battery Athlon series processor (35W TDP) in this configuration and the ATI Radeon discrete graphics ... both of which consume a large chunk of power. With Windows Vista power management set to Toshiba Tecra M9 battery the "power saver" mode, screen brightness set to 50%, and wireless turned on, the dv6z lasted 2 hours and 12 minutes with the 6-cell battery. On the "high performance" power setting, with screen brightness turned up to Toshiba Tecra P10 battery 100% the battery life dropped to 1 hour and 36 minutes.While this is "acceptable" battery life for a desktop replacement with discrete graphics, we would have liked to see at least three hours of battery life in the Toshiba Tecra P5 battery "power saver" mode with the standard battery.

Heat and Noise The Pavilion dv6z does a reasonable jobLENOVO FRU 42T4536 keeping heat under control, but there are still some hot spots to watch out for when using this notebook on your lap. The system fan and heatsinks in the notebook do a great job managing heat LENOVO 40Y8313 when the system is under load but the bottom corner near the heat exhaust can get uncomfortably hot ... as we discovered when we ran multiple benchmarks back to back. Below are images with "average" temperature LENOVO ASM 92P1179 readings listed in degrees Fahrenheit ... the notebook can get cooler or hotter depending on use.Noise was likewise a mixed blessing on the dv6z. The fan moved a significant amount of hot air and theLENOVO FRU 92P1180 fan noise was reasonably quiet at idle. However, when the system was under stress the fan became as loud as a quiet hair dryer. Of course, the manufacturer of the cooling fan in your LENOVO FRU 92P1182 notebook might be different and the dv6z should produce less heat if you configure it with the integrated graphics card, so your mileageLENOVO 41U3196 (or decibels) may vary.

It is almost difficult to describe how fast this notebook is in normal operation. LENOVO ASM 42T5226 With the Intel Core i7 975 processor, 6GB of RAM, and OCZ Vertex drives in RAID 0, the Clevo D900F blasts through any task you can think of. Installing software happens abnormally fast, boot and shutdown times are very quick, LENOVO ASM 42T5228 and game load times are phenomenal. Going back to my ThinkPad T60 to type this review felt like I was transitioning to my parents' 10-year-old desktop. To give you an idea of how fast this processor is,LENOVO FRU 42T4552 the previous "fastest" notebook in our office was an ASUS W90, scoring 23.5 seconds in wPrime when overclocked to 3.3GHz. This system finishes wPrime in an amazing 7.2 seconds!LENOVO FRU 42T5225 PCMark05 also increased significantly, jumping nearly 6,000 points over the ASUS W90. Fan noise was above almost all the other notebooks we have reviewed, having four high speed fans to cool the various internal LENOVO FRU 42T5227 components. The processor has two fans to itself, one for the system memory, and the forth for the graphics card. Under light use most of the fans are off or spinning very slowly. Under stressful activityLenovo 40Y8314 such as running benchmarks or gaming the fans kick on loud enough to be heard in a decent sized room. Gaming in a classroom would be possible, if only because the battery wouldn't last long enough toLenovo 40Y8318 annoy those around you.

Keyboard and Touchpad The full-size keyboard with number pad on the dv6z takes advantage of all of the space provided by the wide 16” Lenovo IdeaPad Y650A battery chassis. In previous years the keyboards on 15-inch and 17-inch HP notebooks suffered from at least some flex under typing pressure. Thankfully, the keyboard on Lenovo ThinkPad X200t battery the dv6z is remarkably firm and quite comfortable to type on. The only area that suffered from flex was around the "F" key, but we had to apply significant pressure for the flex to become visible. The touchpad buttons are in a great location and are easy to control with your thumb. What might be a problem is the fact that FUJITSU SIEMENS Stylistic ST6012 battery Dell only offers the Studio XPS 16 with a "frameless" glossy display ... the type that uses a separate glossy protective layer in front of the actual display panel. The keyboard is firm with only a minor bit of flex detected near the "Enter" key. All the keys have excellent travel and cushion. Unlike the Studio 17,FUJITSU SIEMEN ESPRIMO Mobile V5555 battery which featured a dedicated number pad, the fullsize keyboard on the Studio XPS 16 looks smaller than it actually is thanks to the massive speaker grills located on either size of the keyboard (more on FUJITSU LifeBook A1220 battery that later). The only complaint some may have is that the keys are "flatter" than the ones used on other Dell notebooks, so touch typists might have a learning curve when using this notebook. The keyboard also features a nice white LEDFUJITSU LifeBook A6210 battery backlight function when you're typing in the dark.

The Synatics touchpad works well enough,Toshiba Tecra S10 battery though it seems a little on the small side given the size of the notebook. The mouse buttons have excellent travel and cushion when pressed. Keep in mind, however, that we received a pre-production unit, and HP claims that the production units shipping to customers have even better support against flex.The Sony VGP-BPS13 individual key presses are quiet without loud clicking sounds as you type. The depth of each key press is excellent, though some people may dislike the flat, chicklet-style keys. The touchpad texture is okay, but the low-cost material used is sure to develop wear over time and use. The plastic touchpad buttons are about the right size, Samsung AA-PB2NX6W , but require a deep press in order to register a click. This wouldn't be a problem if the area directly beneath the touchpad buttons was indented to allow the side of your thumb to press the buttons all the way down. The display cover has the durable plastic "Espresso Black" Imprint finish which holds up quite well to minor abrasion without scratching. The screen also sports a latchless design, making it easy to open the notebook with one hand. While most notebooks have a removable panel on the bottom of the notebook to access the RAM, hard drive, and wireless card, HP designed the ProBook 4510s so  Lenovo 42T4731 , that you have to remove 10 screws and the entire top half of the chassis (including separate speaker grill, keyboard, and touchpad area) in order to replace or upgrade components. As you can see in the image below, that is a lot of work for a small IT department or small business owner who just wants to upgrade the RAM or replace a hard drive. Granted, many businesses will never upgrade their notebooks and will simply use them as-is until they are replaced ...Lenovo 42T4715 , but the complexity of upgrades and repairs is something to keep in mind. The ProBook 4510s comes equipped with a 15.6" anti-glare display with a 16:9 widescreen ratio. At 1366 x 768 pixels, this 720p high-definition display is perfectly usable and features good color and contrast. The HP ProBook 5330m does have an array microphone built into the top of the display for use with the webcam. The other two USB ports live on the right side, as does the ethernet jack and power supply connector.This particular HP laptop also lacks a built-in optical drive, which makes the weight of 1.87kg (sans Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 13inch Battery ,  power brick) a bit inexplicable. We've seen units with optical drives that weigh less (but those laptops also cost more). It's comfortable to type on, even talking into account the significant flex. The plastic base plate around the keys is separate to the rest of the body and doesn't connect as well as we'd like. It's not a massive issue and probably not one you'd even notice that much, Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 15inch Battery ,but it does indicate that the build quality of this laptop is some way short of seamless.The trackpad is pretty big, and its rough coating makes sliding your finger around easy. Naturally, we'd prefer a 1TB drive, but it's still better than the 500GB hard drive offered on similar models.The P770 has a pretty good trackpad. It has the wide, flat keys of an isolated keyboard but they're more tightly grouped together, like on a traditional keyboard. The results are excellent. The keyboard has almost no flex in the middle ACER Aspire 5736 Battery , and the keys have a fair amount of travel and so feel fast to type on.The layout is good too. The Asus K53E comes in a number of flavours but the one we reviewed -- the SX123V -- packs an Intel Core i5 processor and 4GB of RAM. It comes with an affordable price tag of £440.It's available now from SaveOnLaptops, Dabs and Expansys.Design and build quality The K53E isn't beautiful enough to earn it a place in an art gallery, but it's not the most hideous laptop we've ever seen. After several lengthy bouts, we had to conclude that it is indeed very scratch-proof. You can slide your fingers along this lovely, smooth trackpad all day, but you might attract a few looks. Around the side of the machine you'll find an HDMI port, three USB 2.0 ports, an Ethernet port, headphone and microphone jacks, a DVD drive and an SD HP ProBook 4418s Battery , card reader. There's no Blu-ray drive so don't plan on playing your high-definition discs on the Asus K53E, but this price though we can't complain. A USB 3.0 port would have been welcome though; this would have allowed you to hook up an external hard drive and transfer data with epic speed. The 15.6-inch screen is certainly not the brightest thing we've ever seen so it's probably not going to be a  HP ProBook 4418  Battery, great companion if you make a habit of working in strong sunlight -- you know, while sipping Martinis in Monte Carlo. It has a resolution of 1,366x768 pixels, which isn't great, but it's fine for most computing tasks and web browsing. If you do want a more special movie-watching experience, you can simply connect it to a TV using the HDMI port. Those are the specs you'd see on a higher priced machine so we were hoping for a decent performance for the money. HP HSTNN-UB0G , Colours seemed less vivid and it was hard to achieve a balance of making the pictures look crisper without also introducing a lot of mosquito noise around the edges of objects. Without the Active Vision motion processing engaged, you can see motion blur creeping in on faster-moving images. Unlike some of the other 3D models in Toshiba's line-up, the 55WL863 uses active 3D technology.HP HSTNN-OB0F ,  Unfortunately Toshiba's active glasses are big and bulky and quite uncomfortable to wear, especially compared to the smaller and lighter specs supplied with Samsung's active sets. Nevertheless, when watching 3D Blu-ray discs, image quality for 3D pictures is very impressive. They look crisp and sharp and the panel's high brightness levels go a long way towards counteracting the dimming effect of the active specs. The large screen size and Cevo processing produce an excellent sense of depth, helping to suck you into the stereoscopic effect. VGA and HDMI outputs are present, along with a multi-format card reader, 3.5mm sockets for headphones and a mic, three USB ports (one of which supports USB 3.0), and a 2-megapixel webcam lurking above the display. This laptop runs the 64-bit edition of Windows 7 Home Premium, and packs inAcer TravelMate 4740-5462G50Mnss02 Battery ,  a 750GB, 7,200rpm hard drive for good measure.The trackpad's fine, but the keyboard makes us feel sad. The laptop's battery life is pretty good. We weren't expecting much from a machine that's not built to be particularly portable but, when we ran the N53SN's CPU at a constant 100 per cent, the battery held out for 2 hours and 33 minutes before conking out. Deceptively thin In many ways the R850 looks like a supersized version of the R830 we'll be reviewing shortly. It has a similar black and chrome finish that looks very professional. Unlike the R830, however, it feels as though it's well bolted together and Acer TravelMate 5740-332G16Mn Battery ,that it'll stand up to long-term abuse. For a 15-inch model, it's relatively thin at 25mm, and light too, tipping the scales at just 1.48kg.The R850 is smart, professional looking and built to withstand the rigours of everyday use. Under the bonnet the R850 has a fairly meaty specification. It uses an Intel Core i5-2410M processor that's clocked at 2.3GHz, but the chip's Turboboost Acer TravelMate 5740 Battery , technology allows it to ****matically overclock itself to a maximum of 2.9GHz in short bursts when an application particularly needs it. The processor is helped along by 6GB of RAM and there's also a dedicated AMD Radeon HD Acer Travelmate 5735ZG Battery , 6450M graphics chip.In PCMark 05 it managed to rack up an impressive score of 7,629, while in 3DMark 06 it posted a result of 4,696. The PCMark 05 score shows the laptop is certainly not lacking in Acer Travelmate 5735Z Battery , performance muscle, so it'll have no problem crunching its way through even more demanding multi-tasking duties. Acer TravelMate 5740-5092 Battery , Acer TravelMate 5740-524G32Mn Battery , Mixed bags Because Toshiba sees this laptop as primarily for work rather than play, it's kitted it out with a 15.6-inch matte display, as opposed to one that uses a glossy coating. The matte finish does mean that colours look a little less vibrant than they do on glossy screens, but this display's LED backlighting means it still looks very bright. Given the relatively high price of the laptop, we would have preferred to see a higher resolution than the 1,366x768 pixels on offer, especially as it would have made it easier to work on two documents side by side.The spacebar on the R850's keyboard was lazy, in our experience. Spacebars these days, they don't know they're born. Acer TravelMate 5740-434G32Mn Battery , The keyboard is a mixed bag too. It uses tile-like keys that are wide and flat and the action is quite springy. The spacebar on our sample didn't always register properly when we were touch typing on it, which was more than a little annoying. Nevertheless, the keyboard is spill-resistant, so if you knock a can of Coke over it, it shouldn't be the end of the world.The R850's 500GB hard drive  Acer TravelMate 5740-372G25Mnss Battery , offers plenty of room for storing documents and files and also has an impact sensor that can park the drive's heads, if it senses that the laptop is going into freefall, in order to protect your data. Along with two standard USB 2.0 ports, there's also a USB 3.0 port on the left hand side. Although there aren't a huge number of USB 3.0 devices on the market at the moment, it's still good to see it included here. What's more, Toshiba has also added a dual-function eSATA/USB port that's enabled for sleep and charge. This allows you to charge portable kit like smartphones and MP3 players even when the laptop is switch off.If you need to hook the R850 up to a hi-def TV, the HDMI port which is nestled alongside the VGA output will come in very handy, as it carries both audio and video over the same lead.Acer TravelMate 5740G-334G32Mn Battery ,  Networking duties are taken care of by a Gigabit Ethernet port, wireless n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth V3.0.Most 15-inch laptops manage to run for around 1 hour 20 minutes in our Battery Eater test. This test runs the processor at full whack to simulate worst-case-scenario battery life. The R850 did better than most, managing to keep going for 1 hour 42 minutes, which is pretty impressive Acer TravelMate 5740G Battery , in anyone's book.Conclusion Overall, the Satellite Pro R850 is a solidly built laptop that offers good performance and has a decent lineup of features. It doesn't excel in any one particular area, however, and we were disappointed by its less than inspiring keyboard. Toshiba's L730 is a small and light 13-inch laptop with a young and funky look that's likely to win it a lot of fans among students, especially as it's relatively affordable. The design is top class as the glossy lid and keyboard surround has an interesting diamond pattern stamped into it and there'sAcer TravelMate 5742-372G25Mn Battery ,  beautiful detailing such as the elongated speaker grills. We also love the nicely curved edges and the contrasting black keyboard and touchpad buttons.The laptop's 13.3-inch screen has a resolution of 1366x768 pixels, which is pretty standard for a machine in this price range. The display has a glossy rather than matte coating, so it is a bit reflective, but we didn’t find this all that distracting when using it in the office under bright overhead lights. It produces very bright and crisp images and colours are rich and vivid and the wide viewing angles that make it great for sharing a movie with a friend while travelling.Unlike a lot of the laptops we see today, this model doesn’tAcer TravelMate 5742-373G32Mn Battery ,  have an isolated keyboard. Instead the keys are tightly packed together as they are on a traditional tapered style model. However, the keys that Toshiba has used are a bit flatter and a tad wider than usual, so your fingers don’t feel cramped when they've hovering above them. On the negative side, the keyboard flexes quite a bit in the centre, with the result that it doesn’t feel as solid as keyboards on some other 13-inch models we've used, such as the one on Samsung's Q330. We've got no such complaints about the trackpad, however. It is integrated seamlessly into the glossy wrist rest, but Toshiba has thankfully added a roughened texture to its surface which feels less sticky under your finger. When it comes to ports, the right hand side of the L730 is home to single USB 2.0 socket as well as with the Ethernet socket and VGA output. The USB port is enabled for sleep and charge, so if you switch this feature on using a software control panel in Windows you can use it to charge mobile devices such as cameras and MP3 players even when the laptop is switched off. The left hand side houses a further two USB 2.0 ports along with the DVD writer and an SD card reader. Sadly there's no HDMI port, though.Needs RAMping up This model uses an Intel Core i3 380M processor. This is clocked at 2.53GHz and supported by 2GB of RAM, which is a little bit on the stingy side. Windows 7 performs much better with 3 to 4GB of RAM. Nevertheless, the laptop performed reasonably well in the PCMark06 benchmark test. It posted a score of 5,322 -- not bad considering the small amount of RAM available to it, but not as quick as the Acer TimelineX 4820T. This was reflected in the 3DMark06 test where it posted a very poor result of just 1,641. Intel's latest graphics technology has around twice the 3D performance, in comparison. The upshot is that this laptop is not much cop at gaming, although its graphics prowess is fine for playing back HD videos and the like.The L730 isn't a bad performer when it comes to battery life. In our Battery Eater test, which continually runs the processorDell 312-0234 383CW , at full whack to simulate an extremely heavy processing load, it managed to keep running for an hour and 47 minutes, which is pretty good for this class of machine. Bear in mind that under real world conditions you're likely to get much longer from it.Conclusion All in all, the L730 is a good looking machine that turns out to be a decent performer too. However, if you are thinking of making the purchase, we'd recommend you upgrade its RAM as soon as possible. The MSI CX640 may not be the prettiest 15.6-inch laptop around, or the sveltest, but it certainly offers decent performance.
